Blue Mountain Beach information
Blue Mountain Beach is located in and around Scenic Highway 30a along the Beaches of South Walton mainly between Highway 393 and just east of Highway 83. In the center of this 30a community, the elevation rises sharply.
You will find some of the staple restaurants and shops of this beach community right around the area that 30a seems to climb the “Mountain“. Here is just a small sample of what you can find is the: For The Health Of It (health food store, juice bar and massages), restaurants like Johnny McTighes Irish Pub, Redds Filling Station, Blue Mountain Beach Creamery (the best ice cream in town), and Big Daddy’s Bike Rentals. One of the most popular areas is Redfish Village.
What is the elevation in Blue Mountain Beach?
The highest point in Blue Mountain Beach is 64 feet above sea level. It‘s a long way from actually being a mountain but it is said to be the highest point along the Gulf of Mexico in the United States. Many years ago sailors named the town Blue Mountain. The name came about from what they saw while out at sea. The sand dunes that perched high above the coastline were covered in the blossoms of the Blue Lupine flower, which still is found in between the homes and condos. They thought that there was no simpler name than Blue Mountain Beach and the rest is history.
Where is Blue Mountain Beach public beach access?
There is public beach access at the end of Highway 83. At this beach access, you will find bathrooms and showers at the top of the stairs.South Walton Beach lifeguards patrolling the Gulf of Mexico below. You can easily spot this beach access by looking for the colored beach flag flying. Although there is public parking at the beach access it is very limited. If you are hoping to have hassle-free parking at the beach this summer then make sure you get here early.
What is nearby Blue Mountain Beach?
This quiet beach town is smack dab in the middle Gulf Place and Grayton Beach. You could take a relaxing bike ride on the 30a bike path to get to either of these neighboring communities without too much effort. Along the way, you will pass some of South Walton beaches coastal dune lakes.
Heading east to Grayton Beach on 30a you will first cross Big Redfish Lake and then Little Redfish Lake followed by Alligator Lake. Try to make it a point to stop and take in the natural beauty of these lakes. They also make excellent photo opportunities. Heading west toward Gulf Place on 30a the road veers just a little bit inland. At this point start to look at the right-hand side of the road for Justin Gaffrey’s art studio. From here the road and bike path head down the “Mountain” and cross Draper Lake. This is another great photo opportunity. The bike path has its own bridge which resembles an old-time train trestle.
